Saving Lives since 1955
Porthtowan Surf Life-Saving Club is based on the north coast of Cornwall, U.K, close to Redruth, Mt Hawke and Truro. We were formed in April 1955 to provide volunteer beach patrols to stop people drowning in the surf. Our club exists to save life from the sea at Porthtowan, and our primary aim is to train our members to become surf lifeguards using our extensive experience of our beach.
Our nipper section is for children aged 5-12 years old. We focus on developing beach safety knowledge, confidence in the sea, physical fitness, basic first aid, competition, friendship and team work. We currently have 120 nippers who train each week at the beach or in the swimming pool. Children must be able to swim 25m unaided to join.
Our junior section is for children who are between 12-16 years old who have developed the skills at nipper level and want to qualify as surf lifeguards . We coach all the surf life saving sport disciplines, from racing ski paddling to surf boat rowing. We also run the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and the Graduate Lifeguard scheme through our activities on the beach.
Our senior section run a successful surf boat team. Training takes place on the River Fal in the winter from Mylor Harbour on Sunday mornings and off the beach at Porthtowan in the summer.
